I just put my 7 plus next to my sons XR while playing a movie in landscape and the movie plays bigger on the 7 plus. Meaning the viewing area is smaller on the XR. Does this make sense to anyone ?

The iPhone 7 Plus has a different resolution and pixel density screen.

    IPhone XR:

Display Size: 6.1-inch (diagonal) widescreen. Display Resolution: 1792-by-828-pixel resolution. Pixel Density: 326 ppi

    IPhone 7 Plus:

Display Size: 5.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen. Display Resolution: 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution. Pixel Density: 401 ppi

Do the math. Don’t forget to take in to consideration the video source resolution.

I appreciate your answer but don’t know what those numbers mean. How does it translate into the XR not utilizing its entire screen ?

What is the source of the movie you are trying to watch? Is it from YouTube?

Basically trying to determine if I should get an XR. Big drawback if bigger screen doesn’t play movies/series bigger.

It depends on the video provider. YouTube allows you to resize the video to full screen on the iPhone XR. So does Vimeo.

The problem is when bringing video full screen like this, it may cut off the top and bottom of the video.
