So I took a chance....and got burned (or scratched).

Is it an actual scratch (you can feel it with a fingernail) or a "micro scratch" in the oleo coating? I've been paranoid ever since I had a Lumia 1020 that I had no protector on and the only other thing in the pocket with it was a 15ml bottle of Systane eye drops that I carried all the time for post laser surgery eye dryness. The top and bottom "chin/forehead" areas of the screen had some pretty good scratching develop which confused me since glass vs. plastic. I've run protectors again since except for a few months last summer/fall with my 7+ before getting an X.

Surprisingly the 7+ only had one small microscratch on it after that, but I also stopped carrying the eye drop bottle a couple years ago so who knows what would have happened if I still was. I was thinking about pulling the protector off my X cause the oleo coating on the protector is definitely shot in the lower third (really builds up oils now) but now you have me second guessing that and probably just getting a new protector for it.

I'm going to order a screen protector to see what happens. It's definitely noticeable but it's not in an area that is distracting. It's in the top right corner of the screen and goes down about an inch. It's a pretty nice scratch. I was honestly surprised that it scratched so easily as it was only my Airpods case that was in the pocket and it was for maybe 15 minutes. But oh well. I should have known better lol.

Depending on the severity of the scratch, it may disappear completely. The noticeable scratch on my 5 disappeared and I had it for 2 years until the 6 came out, only ever saw it if I took off the protector to swap it out.

It’s definitely a modern phone problem, I own an iPhone 7 and that’s in relatively good condition despite never using a screen protector. I also own a Note 8 and that has plenty of scratches none of which I can explain, you only have to look at the thing and it scratches. My wife has a smallish scratch on her iPhone 8 despite mothering it.

Define "modern"? The iPhone 5 I had in 2012 had a scratch within a week despite nothing in my pocket. Probably a dirt particle or something that scratched it. Never shared my pocket with anything else and still happened when I went without one on my 4 with no issues.

That does really suck about the display being scratched and yet they claim is super strong glass, but I always try to keep extra screen protectors on hand just in case I have to swap or got dust under the screen which really annoys me.

Let's not forget that you were encouraging the OP to drop their phone and then claim the damage on their insurance.

I’m missing something here. People purchase Apple Care Plus as a means to get their damaged Apple product fixed at a fraction of cost in lieu of having to fork over the full amount for a replacement.

With that being said, why would the comment by Andrew Clark1 deter you from purchasing Apple Care Plus, especially when Apple basically has a no questions asked policy with it?

My thought is that it happened during a brief moment of having my X share a pocket with my AirPods case. Wasn't more than 15 minutes they were in the same pocket while I was carrying my daughter through the store.

Very odd indeed.

IMHO, if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a device, then I'm also spending the same amount to protect it. :)

Now, back to the OP subject. I'm finding it hard to believe that happened from 15 minutes of being in the same pocket as your airpods case. I'm not saying it didn't happen, because even if I saw it happen with my own eyes I still wouldn't believe it. I've carried my 6S+ and 7+ in the same pocket with airpods case AND keys with no scratches on the glass. Maybe I'm just lucky, but like I said even if I saw it happen I still wouldn't believe it. Did Apple use a "cheaper" glass in the X than in everything else?

But my feelings are the same as everyone else here. If you can live with the scratch then do so. If not, then use one of your AC claims. I'd probably do the same.

I'm not saying that is definitively how it happened, but I truly am very mindful about how I use my device. When it's on my desk it's placed on a soft cloth. It's in a car mount while I drive. It's on a cloth when I'm at home. The only time it was in a more questionable position was when it was in my pocket with my airpods. So I truly can't think of any other way this happened. I could see if I tossed it in a bag or with my keys or if I had dirty pockets. But my living environment has very few hazardous materials that could have caused this. And *knock on wood* I've never dropped my phone.

So I don't know how else it could have happened honestly.

But oh well...it is what it is. I'll live with it until I can't lol.

No screen protector here. Got scratches yeah and in my Country there is no Apple care.
Had 7 plus before and to me it seems that the X got more easily scathing surface in the glass than the 7 plus had.
Yeah many have complained of the same thing. Their X has scratched much more easily than the 7 screen did.

Yes you are missing something. Someone has to pay for the people who deliberately drop their phones and get them replaced under Apple Care Plus, as suggested by Andrew Clark1. Someone has to pay for the people who break their phones every year. Someone has to pay for the people who keep their phones in the same pocket as their keys and get scratches on the screen. If you buy Apple Care Plus, that someone is you. I'm sure Apple don't run it at a loss.

I have never broken a mobile phone. (I have had a phone fail because of a fault, but that was replaced in line with normal consumer protection laws, and did not require extra insurance.) Even if I break my phone tomorrow and have to replace it, I am far ahead of the game compared to buying Apple Care Plus or other similar insurance for every phone I have owned. The same is likely to be true for anyone who is even moderately careful with their possessions.

Check out this page for more details of how insurance works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insurance
There are some types of insurance that are worth having, for example for a car or a house, or for travel. In these cases, the potential losses and liabilities if something bad happens are very high and an individual may not be able to cover them by themselves. That's not usually the case with a mobile phone, so insurance is not really necessary. It's also worth noting that Apple Care Plus for an iPhone 10 costs more than it costs to insure many houses.

Apple sells Apple Care Plus to its customers who want it. Why would Apple do that? I highly doubt it’s out of the kindness of its heart. Since Apple is a business, it’s safe to say that it saw an opportunity to make more money.

Think about it. Let’s say that one million people spent $129 on Apple Care Plus. That’s equates to 129 million dollars. A majority of the people in this example will more than likely buy a protective case for their device and others will also purchase a screen protector. Even if 10% of those people damaged their device and got it replaced with Apple Care Plus, they still have to fork over $29 for screen repair and $99 for a replacement device.

100,000 people (10% of a million) would pay Apple an additional 2.9 million dollars combined if they all needed screen repairs. Those same people would pay Apple an additional 9.9 million dollars combined if they all needed a replacement device. That’s additional money paid to Apple on top of the 129 million that’s already been paid.

The iPhone X allegedly cost $370 to build. If the 100,000 people got replacement iPhone X devices, that equates to 37 million dollars. That’s far less than the $129+ million that Apple has made selling Apple Care Plus.

Here’s the kicker. I will argue that 80% of the aforementioned million people are on an installment plan either with Apple or their wireless carrier. In other words, they don’t even own the phone outright yet.

You said that “Someone has to pay for the people who deliberately drop their phones and get them replaced under Apple Care Plus...”

It looks to me that the debt has long been paid.

Exactly.
I’m not trying to say people shouldn’t buy insurance for devices but I don’t. It’s expensive and the chance of me needing it is slim. As already said, companies make money on these policies. They are sold on fear. What does that tell you?
