I watched a first impressions video from mr mobile on the iPhone X. I was surprised to see that the swipe up to close an app has been removed in favour of long press and tap a minus like in the old days of iOS 6 and earlier.

Why did they do this? The swipe up gesture to go home is done from the very bottom of the phone. So swipe up on an open app doesn’t interfere with the home gesture as it can be done in the middle of the app card. Other iPhones keep the old gesture to dismiss. Any thoughts?

It’s possible that swiping up to close was interfering with another gesture (maybe swipe to go home?). Besides, it usually isn’t necessary to force close an app unless it’s misbehaving.

Can confirm that the swipe up does not work any longer. Long press on the app to bring up the little red minus sign and close the app. Source: used a demo unit today

Also, you can no longer display your battery percentage in the top corner on the phone. The option simply isn’t there

Also my understanding is once you press and hold to enable the minus signs you can tap as many as you want which would be just as quick if not quicker than swiping the cards. So it's a little extra step if you're just closing one thing, but could be just as fast or faster maybe if you're closing a lot of things. That's too bad about the battery % cause I really like to see that but I figured something had to go away with the limited real estate up there.

The change seems unnecessary to me. It adds another difference to the other iPhones. The user interfaces is more fragmented now.

The battery percentage is now shown in Control Center.

I get why they did it, but I miss swiping apps away. I know I don't need to, but I only leave Messages and Mail open all the time. I just can't stand having tons of apps open.

If you swipe up and hold to initiate the “app killing” you can then swipe up to remove OR press the red “-“. I like that you can do both.

Interesting I thought I read you could only tap the red minus signs on the X's. Cool that you can still swipe then.

Yeah, you just have to initiate the red minus sign, then you can swipe away.

I stand corrected. I thought only the long press then tap the minus closed an app. Thanks for clarifying.
