iPhone 8/X bluetooth 5 range together with bluetooth 4

I am considering buying a new iPhone. I am using an older Apple Watch and AirPods. As the new iPhone 8/X is using bluetooth 5, I wonder if it will widen the range, even the older gadget are using bluetooth 4?

Or does is only work, if both gadget are on bluetooth 5?

I’m sure there is a technical answer but from a practical point I’ve noticed my AirPods work at a slightly better range but that could be other factors.
My watch is usually on Wi-fi so can’t comment on that
