Text messages don't show up in messages

If someone sends me a text message from a non iphone I get the notification and the messages icon gets a number over it. But when I open messages the text message is not there.

How do I make the text show up in Messages?

Try resetting the network settings.

I powered off then on the phone and the issue resolved itself.
