You can't play your friends, of course, as they all have their own character and progress.
However, how to play WITH friends? That, I have no clue. I haven't installed the game yet.

Basically I think it's how well you do per course. It gives you a leaderboard there.

It also lets to see how others are competing against you in terms of collected toads for example.

I'm sure over time Nintendo will expand this
