Why are updates not pushing to Google apps?

Our small business recently migrated to Google Apps for our email and calendaring. I've noticed that mail is pushed to my iphone with no problem while utilizing the gmail app. However, calendar updates are not being pushed to my iphone via the google calendar app.

Use Case - If one of our staff adds something to my calendar in Google (complete with notifications), it will not "push" to my phone's Google Calendar app. I missed an appointment today, because of this issue. When I open the calendar app, it will "refresh", but only when I open the app. Background app refresh is on along with the appropriate notification permissions.

I believe this has something to do with the ongoing rivalry between Apple and Google. I don't know which one is the culprit, but anything Google related in iOS isn't fully supported natively anymore.
