Minecraft Pocket Edition Multiplayer?

I was wanting to download Minecraft Pocket Edition but was curious if it had true online multiplayer. I know you used to be able to play over local wifi and it says that in the description BUT it goes on to say that you can craft with players anywhere in the world. So, can you play true multiplayer on it?

I have the latest NAND can only do local wifi? but I've never actually tried?
Maybe it's referring to some kind of sharing of your world system?

Well I saw an article that was dated back in December that said multiplayer was in the works for it.
