Garageband connections

Just recently got apogee JAM guitar input for christmas and started playing around with garageband. Was wondering how everyone connects and uses it. My issue is this: I dont want to use the iPad speakers to hear what im playing. I tried using my wifes urban beats headphones but as soon as I plugged it in, it treated it as a microphone, and dumped the guitar input. Am i missing something, a setting perhaps? I would prefer ultimately to take the output and go through my amp. Any input would be greatly appreciated, sorry if its a newbie question.

I don't have an iPad but I know that an external dock has a line level audio out port. See here

I also know that the same dock for the iPod has a higher quality output than the headphone jack.

Dug up an old set of headphones, ones without mic built in, did the trick.
