Swirling Distorted Panorama Effect

I recently read about a swirling or distorted panorama effect on an iPhone. I don't mean the apps that use video to create a panorama from footage. I'm talking about an effect that streams from the iPhone camera's sensor as the iPhone is held still and someone turning in circles in front of the camera and produces effects like these: betterlight dot com/misuse_feature/misuse dot html

I can't remember where I saw this effect discussed, but I know it's out there. I hope one of you knows where I can find more info on this.
