On Valentine?s Day, 1931, Universal Pictures released the silver screen?s first real horror film ? Dracula. The movie became a smash hit and commercial success, and propelled its lead actor ? the towering and charismatic Bela Lugosi ? to film superstardom.

Lugosi was actually a native of the mysterious Romanian land known as Transylvania, a land bathed in the spooky legends of vampires. After becoming a successful stage actor in Budapest, Lugosi immigrated to the United States and won the role of ?Dracula? in the original Broadway production. The powerful performance ? a perfect showcase for Lugosi?s ?erotic charisma? ? made the stage show a huge success. His subsequent starring role in the screen adaptation and a series of horror films made him, at one time, ?more popular than Clark Gable.?

However, the man so identified with Dracula was himself, in his personal life, a tragic figure. He struggled to establish a career outside of horror films, finding himself typecast as a villain, and was plagued with black-listing, depression, divorce and a crippling addiction to painkillers. Even as his career waned, Lugosi never gave up his love of acting ?starring in a series of films for the director Ed Wood before his death in 1956. Tim Burton?s 1994 biopic Ed Wood featured an Academy Award-winning portrayal of Lugosi by actor Martin Landau, helping to revive the actor?s status for a new generation.
