I'm looking at this app actually.

Docs to Go. I have quibbles with some of the editing tool layouts, but it does an amazing job syncing documents and editing them without losing the original document formating. Bar-none the best in the department.

If that's not important (meaning, plain Word documents with no real formatting) Pages works just fine. I have typed up entire research papers on it, exported to Word just fine.

I prefer Google Docs actually. It's cloud based, so I can update from iPad or PC/Mac.

You don't need a 3rd party app either for Google Docs. Google docs works wonderfully in iPad's Safari.
