Stop message notifications appearing more than once, and/or mark as read without opening app?

I'm using an iPhone. Whenever I get a text message, I see the notification at the top of the screen and quickly read it before the notification goes away. However, this does not lead to the message being marked as "read". If my phone is turned off and on, the notifications appear all over again. This is very annoying.

Is there a way around this without going to the messages app and clicking on messages individually, or clicking edit --> read all?

I just want messages to be marked as read when I see the notification.

This works for emails. Don't know about text messages, sorry.
