Thanks to sedentary office work and 32 years of sign language interpreting, my wrists are unable to handle the larger iPhone nowadays. I'm wondering about the following when upgrading to the next generation but downsizing in screen/body size:

1 - How will the standard 8's camera compare to the 7 Plus's dual cameras?
2 - How much worse is battery life?
3 - Will the 2 GB of RAM in the 8 be dramatically worse in performance and keeping apps open in the background than the 3 GB of RAM in the 7 Plus? Or will the A11 chip upgrade cover the gap there?

Hello there and welcome to iMore!

    1. The only thing you’ll miss out is the dual cameras features such as 10x zoom, portrait mode, etc..

    2. It depends on your usage but the battery life on the Plus is far more superior IMO.

    3. Not it would not. The A11 is very very fast.

Also one thing to keep in mind on the RAM. My understanding was that the main reason for the extra GB of RAM on the 7 and 8+ is for processing the portrait mode stuff. Since the 7 and 8 don't have dual cameras and portrait mode, they don't need it apparently.

I’m one of the people who don’t really put a lot of emphasis on the iPhone’s camera because I’ve always been content with the photos my iPhone has taken over the years. I don’t take the type of photos I want to put on a billboard or a poster. Typically, they’re the type that I can easily share via email or iMessage and then delete when I’m finished or upload to OneDrive for safe keeping. With that in mind, the camera on the iPhone Plus is indeed better than the one on the non-Plus model, but by no means is the non-Plus model’s camera is crap because it’s far from it. I think you’ll be surprised at the quality of pics the iPhone 8 can take.

All that you mentioned won't matter much at all. Get what's comfortable for your wrists. The 8 has new camera stuff, the battery will be fine, and you would never notice the difference in RAM or between the A10 and A11 chips.

I hate the body size of the 7 plus however, it runs smoother than my wife's 7 and the screen is nicer.
