email trash count

I'm using my wife's iPhone 7 Plus(she bought a new one), and something isn't working the way that it should. After I read an email in the mail app, I put it into the trash. My wife says that the trash icon should still show a count of all trashed emails until I delete them permanently at the end of the day. Well, it doesn't. I get the count when emails come in, but not after they are put into the trash. Can somebody please tell me, or show me, how the email setup is supposed to do this? Thanks.

The Trash folder will display the number of “unread” email, but if the email has been read prior to going into the Trash folder, it will not.

Why would you need a count on trashed emails? They're automatically deleted after about 30 days.

I’m not aware of an app that’s does that, but if one does, it would probably be Airmail since it’s arguably the most configurable.

Airmail doesn't do it, nor does any email app that I could find.
