    My friends,
I have a problem that disturbs me lots!
In Nigeria no one uses iMessage, the GSM networks does not allow it. My problem is despite that I find it impossible to send regular Sms to some numbers in my contacts I kept getting error message " before iMessage can be sent you have to enable it in settings". I disable anything to do with iMessage in all my Apple devices but to no avail. Moreover, small amount of money is deducted from my account periodically as charges for iMessages sent. What hurts more is some contacts do not even have Apple phones. Please help.

iMessages are FREE whereas SMS messages are not so I can't understand why you're being charged for "iMessages". Furthermore, you do not have to enable iMessages on your device, and unless I'm mistaken, it doesn't come enabled by default. Having said that, unless those recipients do not have SMS messages as part of their cellular plan, they should be able to receive text messages from you. You need to get with your wireless carrier and re-examine your cellular plan, in my opinion.

You should also be sure SMS is enabled and that you have it on your plan.

The photo was very helpful! I've only had my iPhone for a few days, so still learning where all of the settings are. Thank you!!

Sherry, you might like this official iOS guide. The link takes you to iTunes where you download it to your iBooks. It's really nice and helpful.

I don't know what else to tell you, especially if your wireless carrier could not explain the reason for you being charged for text messages. As a last resort, you can try restoring your device and then setting it up as new (not from a backup). After that, Go through each and EVERY setting to make sure that things are as they should be according to your likes and needs.

You can deregister iMessage from your device. This link may help. I had forgot this.

One thing you might try is to change the type of mobile number you have for your Contacts who you message from iPhone to Mobile (no iPhone). For my Contacts I have some that have iPhones and some that don't. I also have a couple who went over to the dark side and got rid of their iPhones for other devices. I also have some that went from non-iPhones to iPhones. Even before i change the mobile type to iPhone in my Contacts if I sent a text to a contact that was using an iPhone but in Contacts it was just a mobile number the message would be a SMS message. I could tell since test to and from an iPhone has a background of green and to and from an iPhone with the Contact as iPhone the background color is blue.
