Why am I asked intermittently to enter my password manuly instead of using the touch id

Every few days on opening my iPhone 6+ I am asked to enter my password manuly instead of just using touch id

i know if you havent used it in 48 hours it asks- also if it reboots you have to enter it as well

If you use a non touch ID finger 5 times to check the lock screen, it will ask for the passcode. If this is the case, try using the power button to check the lock screen.
