There might be a simple answer to this, but I haven't found it so far.

When I am travelling abroad I can only receive texts when I have wifi. This is quite a big issue, since it makes local contact in the country I am travelling difficult.

I would guess that my iPhone would be capable of receiving normal texts when imessaging is not possible? What am I missing?

Are you using your U.S. provider's cell number? Or a provider local to where you are? If your U.S. provider... does that provider forward SMS texts whe you're roaming abroad?
