iTunes Windows write error?

I am running the latest itunes and ios software on a windows 8 HP laptop and a 6+.
Anyone familiar with
-- Attempting to copy to the disk "Windows" failed. An unknown error occurred (-54) -- ?

Attempting to copy what? What do you mean you're running iOS software on a Windows 8 laptop?

jeez i forgot to mention the most relevant detail.... it happens when i sync. about halfway through the sync that dialogue box pops up. if I click ok then the sync progress bar up top in itunes say 'preparing to copy' and never finishes. i have to close itunes with an 'ok' to 'this will cancel syncing'.
however, if i relaunch itunes and click backup it'll go ok.
so I'm not sure what exactly is failing to copy.
any ideas?
