why wont my new iphone 6 plus find my old phones backups?

I just got a new iPhone 6plus because I cracked my old one so when I tried to back it up I had some problems. long story short I figured out how to back it up. Now my new iPhone says that it can't find any backups, and now I'm just really confused. Help?

Is the OS version the same on the new phone as it was on the previous?
