How can I set up my voice mail password?

I just bought an iPhone, 6 Plus. I have everything set up to go but I can't get my voicemail to work. When I try to call, I get the instructions to set up my password. I went into my settings and did that, but I must be doing something wrong. Could you please help me figure out what I need to do?

Welcome to iMore! Voicemail is a carrier function. I would contact your carrier for instructions. Call their customer support.
