    The reason it is 1 million bytes per MB for storage manufacturers is because that is the SI standard, and that's what mfger's go by.
    The reason for difference in formatted storage comes from measuring the actual storage with Microsoft's standard (which was based on RAM which is then based on the standard definition of byte which is 8 bits).
