Being that this is my first iOS device, it could just be me. But is it taking a long time for a new OS release?

    Not really...

There is one in testing now - 8.1.3 that is expected any time... and 8.2 will come with the release of the Watch...

Not really long at all, especially since there aren't any really catastrophic issues that people are jumping off roof tops over.

Just be comforted that in the future if a bug does show up in a release it can get fixed in a few days, not months like android. I love that Apple controls the software on their phones and not the cell carrier.

Furthermore, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus came with the release of iOS 8.0. In 3 months since the release, we've seen iOS 8.01 and iOS 8.1.2.

Im hoping that apple does more to improve ios 8 quality soon. im noticing some slowness and unresponsiveness even on my 6 plus. I assume this is a software thing, not hardware.

Interesting. I haven't noticed any slowness and unresponsiveness on my 6+. But we may use them differently.

Same here. My iPhone 6 Plus is speedy and stable with a few very minor quirks.

After the disaster that was 8.0.1, I am glad it is taking a little longer for apple to make sure they have the bugs ironed out.

Since i've restored my phone about 3 times to the same OS version, i wouldn't mind something new. And not as crashy.

Here's a suggestion....go to iMore's sister site CrackBerry and ask the folks there how long is a "long time" to wait for an OS update.

In all seriousness, the posters in this thread are correct. Apple is very good about updating it's OS when problems arise.

Updates are really only needed for bugs, security, or to add functionality. You would only see them frequently for buggy messes. Which would exclude Apple.
Expect one for the Apple Watch launch.

Do any of your devices work well for you?
Sometimes I think people have this level of absolute perfection that they seek that's unattainable.
After having 5 iPhones, Original,3GS,4S,5S and 6 Plus only 1 had a issue. The 3GS headphone jack went out. That's the only one I had to return. I can't believe I'm that lucky with iPhones to never have a major issue with them.

I agree, and to add to what you've already stated, too many people blame Apple or their devices for problems caused by themselves or by 3rd-party apps. Example: "The iPhone suck! My game crashed as soon as I was about to win".... #smh
