Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I'm finally getting my 6 plus this weekend. Long time Android user. Loved my One M7. This will be my first iOS device.
What do you miss from Android? What do you need to get used to? And what helps in making the transition? I don't think the size will be an issue.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I've been on Android for years. I don't miss it one bit. The glitchy interface and force closing was getting out of hand.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I've had like two force closes across four handsets in the last three months. I don't nursemaid that much either.
What I primarily miss (which I don't, since I run all three major OS's all the time anyway) when I'm on iOS is the ability to do stuff more granular than IFTTT and also have all my widgets on the home screen. The obvious stuff, in other words. Actual app-wise, very little if anything I miss.
And perhaps, on a hardware level, that the M7 is way more indestructible than a 6 Plus :p
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I'm a multi-platform user, as well, so I'm still using several Android devices along with my 6 Plus.
My real adjustment is coming in navigating the OS, specifically the lack of the back button. I'm struggling with using the Pocketmags app right now; the only way that I know of to get back to having access to each issue of a particular magazine is to close the app and reopen it.
I've noticed that many converts say that apps are more polished in iOS than they are in Android. More polished in aesthetics doesn't equal better function, though. The Swype keyboard on iOS doesn't show the symbols on the letter keys, even though they are still there. One of my game apps doesn't calculate the score properly on my iPhone, but is fine on the Android phones that I can play it on.
Overall, I am enjoying the iPhone more this time around than I did when I had the iPhone 4. The larger screen and the choice of keyboards make the device usable for me now. I'm still missing full NFC functionality on the iPhone, though.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss the.... Can't think of anything... I missed the iPhone the whole time I had my s5 and the only iPhone I ever had was the 5.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I have a note 4 and a 6 + so I don't miss anything really. I will say that I do prefer having a dedicated back button. Sounds trivial but it's so much easier. I like being able to put widgets on any screen I want. The whole ringtone thing is much easier on android as well. At the same time, I really do enjoy iOS and the phone is an excellent piece of hardware. I couldn't live with just one os though lol. I don't get any force closing on my note 4 or any android phone I've had.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Had the note 4 Not as smooth as iOS that's my biggest complaint. I hate lag on phones And the note 4 has it. 6 plus seems more polished then the note 4.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I think I just miss all the extra RAM my Note 3 had. For web browsing with a lot of tabs, it was ideal really.
Though I still use my Note 3, it was just to enormous to be used as a phone.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
The 6+ is actually bigger than my note 4 lol. Smaller screen but the iPhone is actually a little taller.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I've used Android, BlackBerry and iOS. But, in all honesty, there isn't anything I miss about Android. For almost two years straight I used BlackBerry (BB10), and thus used Snap for apps. I'm just happy to be using a device that simply works, and has a plethora of apps and developers, too.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
No. It's pretty strange considering that I used android for almost 3 years. I thought I'd miss it more because when I got the 5S earlier this year I missed android too much and went back.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
As others have said, I miss the "Back" button. I also miss the Whoscall app, which was a caller ID and blocking app.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Myself I don't miss Android. Give iOS a fair chance and I think you'll be satisfied.

I did the same thing previously had a note 4 but couldn't get used to Android and how glitchy it was so I went back to the 6 plus

Right now, the only thing I miss is some of the advanced features of SwiftKey that haven't made it onto the iOS version yet.

Choice. I loved having the option to have just about every screen size/finish/storage/camera and the likes. With iPhone you have 1 choice (well 2 now with the 6/6+) but other than that you get what you get.

*touchwiz is glitchy, not android. Skins are the reason android is so buggy, nexus devices always had much less issues than devices with heavy skins on top ala samsung devices.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I can honestly say I don't miss anything. I had a S4 and every time I look at I cringe. I laugh at my husband and all the issues he's currently having with his Android.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I'm miss quite a bit from my moto x to be honest. The biggest things: the ability to make my home screen like I want it, widgets, set default apps and the active display (that's a big one). iOS is well polished and it looks great, but it still lacks in some critical areas of functionality for me personally. I've been on android since 09 and I didn't think it would be that much of a change but its a bit more than I can handle so I think I'm going back to android. However, I still have a few days before my 14 days are up so I'm still going to use it and see what happens.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss the ability to customize my home screen, but that's about it.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss quite a few things, like a file manager and the ability to load documents onto the phone from the computer. I miss the large clock widget and all my widgets. I miss the homescreen rotating through all the screens and going from the last screen to the first. I miss the restart option instead of just power off and I miss the way Swiftkey works on Android....probably some more little things.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Customization & the freaking back button. LOL
Sometimes I wish my iPhone could look like some of these cool Android devices out their with different ROMs and such...but then I realize, I didn't even change the ROM on my LG G3 so i wouldn't do that anyway. LOL Plus the support is better and I have 128GB OF STORAGE! :D
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Thanks for the replies. I'm sure I'll miss the back button. But I just don't have the time/drive to take advantage of the customization Android potentially offers (although it is an awesome, legitimate pro to the OS).
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I came from the htc one m7 to the iPhone 5S to the iPhone 6 plus and I don't miss anything :) I've owned every iphone since the original
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss the menu and back button..
Wish Apple would adopt something like that on the screen down the bottom..
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Customization as well as the ability to download files straight from the web.
-
I like my 6+, but still like android better. Google Now works much better on android than on iOS. Also like notifications better on android. Even this app is better on android and it is imore. Having said that I like apple products but keep an OPO and Nexus 6 to keep me going. After a week on my iPhone, I get bored and have to go back for my fix. Having said that, the iPhone 6+ is a very capable device.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
As a first time iPhone user with the 6+, the only thing that I miss is Tasker/Llama. I did not do anything super fancy, but I did have my moto x change the volume when I connected to my work wifi and could silence the phone based on day and time. And notifications are handled way better on android IMO.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Smart unlock in lollipop. But the fingerprint sensor helps.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Been Android ever since the G1 days. Finally decided to give iOS a try. Just off the top of my head the thing I miss most about Android is being able to download music, install non play store apps, file system control, ad blocking (root), and of course the many customization options.

I think that's about the only thing I'm going to miss when my phone finally gets here is the ability for just about any app to share it's assets with any other.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I have been an Android user for years. This is my first iPhone, but I have an iPad as well so I knew what to expect. I honestly don't miss anything. I always though widgets cluttered my screen and hardly ever used them and the rooting and putting on new ROMs was fun for awhile, but it became too much of chore and I just don't have the time for it anymore. The iPhone just works and that's what I like about it.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
There are a few things I miss some were mentioned above, but the keyboard I miss the most it was the hardest thing to get used to.

That's what scares me. I'm considering the leap to a 6s+ for my next phone, but I use the share menu in Android so much. I don't think I can deal without it.

I was concerned about this as well. I have not had any issues though. Sharing has improved quite a bit. I have not had a situation that frustrated me like I did a few years ago. Sharing is not what it is on android but so far I have been able to do what I need to do. I guess it depends on how you use sharing.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Yes I know that but I needed better alerts than what come with the app. So I had to use something else. Due to my work I can get called in at anytime. So I needed the most obnoxious alerts for the middle of the night lol. The Gmail app you cannot change the alert tone unless I missed it.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss the seamless Google integration. And Google Now from any screen. I can do much of the same things with the Google App but it's slightly clunkier.
I miss Android notifications too. I could delete email right from my notification tray.
The Gmail app on iOS is a little buggy. I use two accounts, one for work and one for personal, switching back and forth a lot. Often it'll get stuck loading one of the accounts and I need to close and restart the app. I just use Mailbox on iOS because I also like that quite a bit.
There's lots about iOS that I like though, so it's not all bad. :)

Not ONE of those features is an Android feature.

Android is an OS, not a phone. A blinking LED and SD cards are not features of an OS. They are hardware features. This thread is about the Android OS, not phones.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Multi platform user here. I still use an Android tablet and phone, also have an original iPad mini as well. What I miss on my iPhone is probably rather stupid. I miss the AT&T All Access widget that shows my data usage. On Android that one is easy. I see that the Verizon widget for the iPhone works to show data on the pull down menu but not the one for AT&T. Maybe they will add that one day.

Then maybe the thread is just mistitled. "Those coming from Android Phones..."
The lights, the SD cards are all part of one's Android experience that they don't get on iOS. Not everyone's experience, but many people's.

This one is annoying to me as well. I'd love to tell Siri to Navigate to... and have it launch Google Maps. I use the Google Now app to do this as a workaround.

You can tell Siri "give me transit directions to" the place you want to go and you will get the option to use any navigation app. But unfortunately does not save as default.

You're arguing just for the sake of arguing here. I specifically said "Android phone" as I am aware that Android is an OS, not a device.
It doesn't matter if the features that were mentioned are features of the hardware or the software in this case because none of those features are features available on an iPhone.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I am having a tough time transitioning from long time android use.... Latest phone is a Nexus 5.
Main thing I miss is the BACK button.. Just seemed easier to me.
Don't get me wrong, I really like my 128gb 6 Plus. Just taking some getting used to.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I'm using an Android phone that is ROM'd and it keeps asking me to select the default app. It never sticks!
My point being that you get an Android phone. Battery life stinks or it doesn't run smooth. Then you root and ROM it to make it better but by doing that you inherit other problems because of hacking the phone. Can't win with Android.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I was really missing the back button, I'm getting used to living without it.
I do miss Ad Blocking(root).

Some Android custom ROMs may have issues. In my experience the custom ROM developers are usually good about listing known issues, and are open to receiving feedback/issue reports.
I've used custom ROM's in the past and got even better battery life (days without needing a charge in some cases), stability, functionality, and performance. That was with a "known good" ROM from a trusted developer, and were debloated ROMs that didn't try to get fancy and add tons of bells and whistles; but rather improved upon the OEM's ROM by removing bloat and optimizing the system.
I miss the Notification system, local "My Documents" file system, and the sharing extents capabilities - among other features. iOS continues to get better with each release overall, but is still lacking in my opinion in areas like the Notification system.
I think you can win with stock non rooted/ROM'd Android - if the experience and ecosystem is for you. Once the root/ROM happens, a Pandora's box is opened, and depending upon the ROM chosen, experience and milage can vary greatly.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I will add that if my Nexus had already had 5.0 installed and all apps optimized, I probably would not have bought this iPhone.
It's a tough call. On the one hand, the battery life and storage on this 128gb 6 Plus is phenomenal. But I do miss Android system.

If I missed anything about Android it'd be the Google integration being that I use several google services. But, I don't miss it enough to allow myself to fall back into the constant switching between Android devices to try them all out like I was doing before getting the current crop of iOS devices!!

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I used to think I will miss the micro-SD card, but with 128GB of internal memory on my 6Plus, I am good on that. Besides, I have plenty of storage spaces on Google Drive and iCloud. The only thing I miss is the direct save of photos to my Google Drive. The iPhone does not allow me to do that for the obvious reason. I prefer to save my photos to Google Drive than iCloud because iCloud downgrade the photo quality in the storage. Beside this small inconvenience, I don't miss Android at all.

I'm not sure if you use Google Plus, but I do my automatic photo uploads via Google Plus rather than Drive. I'm not sure if this would work for your needs, though.

Thanks for the reply. I have G+ but I hardly use it. I prefer Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat. :) Anyway, I don't want to upload automatically my photos to G+ because I may not want to share all of my photos to my Circles. My workaround is to copy the photos from Camera Roll to an SD card, then move them from the SD card to Google Drive for storage. Yes, it is one extra step, but it is more reliable and preserve the photo quality.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I had a Note 2 and the bigger screen and swipe keyboard was only thing I missed till I got my 6+. I think a stylus would be nice coming from a note phone but I didn't use it a lot so it's not missed much.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
So far I'm missing:
-Ability to easily set ringtones/notification tones
And that's about it. Guess my needs are met pretty well with iOS these days. I love the overall smoothness and polish it provides. Also, pretty much every single app I've used is noticeably better on iOS, save for the google ones (Maps being pretty much the only one I use).

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
While I have acclimated to iOS rather easily there are a few areas of android I especially miss.
In no particular order:
Google Now and widget more useful on Android
Ability to set default apps.
Third party keyboards are awesome on android. Rather weak on iOS due to apple limitations.
Notification shade is a little smarter on android (imo) since it groups notifications together instead of showing a ton of updates from the same app as on iOS. Especially on the lockscreen.
-
Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
Notifications are indeed better on Android. Also miss setting my defaults, though Android always had a habit of "forgetting" my defaults and was always asking me again after I thought I had already specified something.
I miss the Gmail app and the way it worked on Android. I could quickly delete unwanted emails from the notification pull down without ever needing to open the App. Also, the Gmail app on iOS frequently gets stuck refreshing when switching between multiple accounts. It never had an issue on Android.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I'm still working on configuring and finding useful apps, but so far, the biggest thing bugging me is the lock screen notification showing content of email or messages - I'd prefer just to see who a message is from.
I'm still looking for a replacement for "Quick Profiles" to easily change a number of settings at once - screen brightness, alerts and volume, etc.
I thought the lack of a 'back' button would bug me, but I've adapted pretty quickly.
Overall, I'm immensely pleased with the new phone - I came from a very low-end phone (Samsung Ace IIx) and was being driven mad by the laggy, unreliable performance of it, so yeah, I know anything would be an improvement!!

The Gmail app controls what/how much is shown in the notification. So you'll have to talk to Google about that. Or maybe there is an app setting for it.

I don't have the gmail app installed but one option would be to go into the notification settings for that app and have it not turn the screen on. You could just rely on sound/vibration to let you know that you have new gmail available.

You can't do much from the app. But if you go into main notifications, you can turn off mail. I did this and now just get the buzz or ding but nothing on my notification screen.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I miss being able to clear cache/app data. Having to delete an app and then reinstall just to clear out caches when they grow huge is really hard to get used to.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
The only reason I have used android in the past was the fact it was running on bigger screens.
I got sick of the lag, the lock ups, the reboots, but i put up with it because I loved the bigger screen.
I always used an iPhone and I would swap back and forth with bigger devices.
Since the iPhone 6 plus I haven't looked back nor I am interested using any plasticky cheap looking laggy phones any longer.
I don't miss the widgets, or the back button at all, but after all I wasn't used to them in the first places as some folks might be.
I still have a note 4 sitting in its box for a few months now and I don't miss it at all, I will probably sell it because I don't see myself using it.

I too have a Note 4 in its box. I used it for about a month until 2 days ago when a got a 6+. My plan is to swap up every 30 days until this time next year.

SD card expandable storage. I can live without the removable battery but I could probably afford more an SD card than $100 more for a bigger storage size iPhone 6 Plus.

I will tell you what I don't miss, fumbling around in the dark trying to plug my phone in. Loving the reversible lightning plug. But I do miss the notifications. Other than that... Nothing.

I'll tell you what I don't miss on android as well and that is wishing I was back on iOS. Now that I'm back I'm here for good.

The long cord i bought with my iphone6plus has to be plugged in right side up (cant tell which is right side up) but other short cord doesnt. And only happens at home, other people have theirs work fine elsewhere??. Anyone know why the difference?.

Re: Those coming from Android: What do you miss?
I still use both quite frequently. I have my 6 plus, and a Nexus 6. The primary thing I miss when being on Android is iMessage. I have a lot of friends and family on iOS, so iMessage is a big deal. Also, I'm afraid to enable iMessage even when using iOS because when I want to disable it again.. I get stuck in limbo and start missing texts from iOS users. :(
What I miss most from Android? Not being able to use my smartwatch. :) C'mon Apple Watch!! :)
