Restoring an Iphone 5s

So I got an old iPhone 5s off of ebay (got it cheap as the touch screen wasn't working, but fixed that)

I did a hard reset on it and plugged into iTunes, it recognised the phone and came up with the serial number and told me it needs to do an update and restore. No problem!

Except after it extracts the software it says waiting for iPhone, and serial number n/a and then I get error 4005.

I'm using an old old mac and an aftermarket iPhone cable. Could either of those be the problem??
