Why do I need to dial the letter X to change my voicemail settings on iPhone 5s?

i need to dial the letter X to change my voicemail settings on iPhone 5s -

cannot access the alpha numeric sequence - need to dial X but even if i hold down 9 the figure 9 remains rather than X

Welcome to iMore! Who is your carrier? I've never heard of this issue before. You may want to try to copy the sequence into another app (like Notes) and then copy and paste it into voicemail settings. If that doesn't work contact your carrier and see if it can be changed to a numeric sequence.
