Hi guys, just a quick question.

Today I bought a new 5S for my wife seeing as her 4 has eventually given up the ghost.

Unboxed it and went to turn it on - nothing. I initially thought it was DOA. Experience told me that I should charge it for 15 minutes or so just to see if if fires up. Luckily it did.

The question I have is that should a new iPhone's battery be absolutely flat when purchased? I have had every iPhone since it's conception and haven't seen this before. To the uninitiated, i.e me, the only two things I can think about is it's been on the shelf for so long, the battery has actually 100% depleted or it's a dodgy battery.

    Should I be concerned?

    many thanks.

I'm not 100% sure about iPhones, but with Windows Phones, when you get a new one, the battery is usually around 60% or so and you have to charge it immediately. I can't recall if this was the case with my iPhone 4 when I got it in 2011, but I do remember having to charge my old iPod classic when I first got it. So, I'm pretty sure you'll be okay with this new 5S.

Both of the 5s I'd bought were dead out of box.

    They were both perfectly fine.

    Thanks for the info, guys.

Well, I have just checked the phone this morning after fully charging it last night, and the battery is still on 100%. So I guess I worried over nothing,

Well, I guessing the battery was completely flat is because it's been on the shelf for so long. Just looked at the IOS - it's 7.1.1. That's about 12 months old, right?

Dare I upgrade? IOS8 doesn't really excite me!!

If you don't want to upgrade, then you don't have to. I did though and I think iOS 8 is okay. Just decide what you want. Don't rush into it because once you upgrade, that's where you'll stay!

My 5s was completely depleted out of the box. Scared the beejeezus out of me.
All the others were at around half.

When I bought by 5s it also had no charge. Charged for an hour and it was fine. Been working extremely well ever since.
