I got my 5s today and not quite understanding the purpose of the Touch ID if I have to put the 4 digit pass code in as well. When my phone is locked and I put my thumb on the home button, it has me "try again" at least 2 times and then the pass code number pad is on screen and I have to enter my code to unlock. I thought setting up the fingerprint ID eliminated the need for a pass code. How should it be set up in Settings so I only need to use my thumb or forefinger (both are set up) to unlock my phone and use it for the App Store?

I would re-register you finger prints.

Also yes you must have a pass code. This is a back up for security.

Also after a reboot or not unlocking the device you will be required to enter pass code.

You can also hangs the App Store settings under touch ID.
