    Hi,

In November I'm going to New York City for 4 days (I'm from Belgium) and I'm planning on buying the new iPhone 5s while I'm there. Is it possible to buy an unlocked iPhone 5s and will it work with my European Sim card? If so, can I just buy an unlocked one in the Apple Store or somewhere else?

It is possible, as long as it's in stock. My understanding is that all three (AT&T, T-Mo, Verizon) should all work when unlocked. I would choose either the Verizon or T-Mobile models, as they are always sim-unlocked.

But also check which LTE bands are supported by your carrier in Belgium compared to the bands supported by the Verizon/tmobile/ATT iPhone (the same for those three carriers). An unlocked iPhone 5S from one of those carriers will definitely work on 3G speeds in Belgium, but LTE will only work on the correct bands.

Ok thanks! Should I go to a Tmobile or Verizon store or just the Apple Store on 5th avenue?

The 5th Ave store is only one of many Apple stores in NYC. There's also a big one at Grand Central Station and other smaller ones. You might want to look up which one will be closest to your travels.

lol...good luck at any of the Apple stores in the city...that 5th Ave store is one of the more popular ones because it has a beautiful entry way made of glass, it was a cool experience. I also liked the grand central station one...those were the two I visited when me and my wife were in Manhattan earlier this year.

By Nov though I would think the supply issues would mostly have been worked out.

Oh, I just meant the stores themselves...we went in February, and there was nothing of note that was released...and it was a MAD HOUSE at both of them, lol.

All the Apple stores in NYC are nice, but if you could only visit one, it's gotta be the Cube on 5th ave. It's the flagship store, & it's open 24/7.

Ok thanks! But I don't really get that list, Belgium is listed under the Model A1429 (GSM model) while there's no American network that has that model...

Then an iPhone purchased in the US will probably only work at 3G speeds in Belgium not at LTE speeds. But you really need to check which LTE bands your Belgian carrier uses and compare to that list to find the correct model.

Def go to the flagship store on fifth ave. Top notch service, open 24/7, and the layout is very cool. I bypassed the apple stores in Long Island just for this one. Applecare, 5s, and 5c owner here, and they did not disappoint. I have been five times since 9/20 and never waited more than 30mins to be seen.

First you gotta Check with your Belgium career which lte band they support. Cos 5s supports lot of lte bands not like ip5.

As an example, all the lte bands used in the Asian region is now supported by iPhone 5s US version.

Thx guys for all the info!

I just checked and my Belgian carrier supports the 1800 and 2600 MHz LTE, that is band 3 and 7. So any iPhone in the US that supports those bands will work with my Belgian SIM Card? So for instance I see that T-Mobile supports band 3 (1800 MHz) on the iPhone 5s model 1533 (GSM) so if I would buy that model, it should work? Sorry for all my stupid questions, just wanna make sure I buy the right iPhone!

Maybe. The problem is that some carriers will use one band for upload and one for download. So it is possible that since the tmobile phone only supports band 3 and your carrier uses bands 3 & 7, that it would only work for upload or download. But some carriers might be using different bands in different locations so in that case you might be ok.

Regardless the phone will work on 3G speeds.

    Hi guys,

Next week I'm leaving to NY and one last question to make sure: at the Apple Store, should I ask for an unlocked iPhone or a device only iPhone? Cause I've different opinions on the aplle support community.
