This might be a silly question but here goes:

Now that's the newness has worn off since I got my phone at the beginning of October, I have been reading a lot about battery (different posts). My 5s battery is great compared to my 4s. To save the battery even more is it a good idea to charge my phone every other day? Since I'm at work & can't use it during work, I find myself having 40% at the end of the night

Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when youre on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.

Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.

iPhone: About standby and usage time
"Last Full Charge"...thats the deceiving part, too bad the standby time wouldn't reset after every time its charged (fully or not). I could partially charge the phone for a week and the standby time would leave a different impression showing 5 Days. Or at least offer a choice of how the standby time resets. Usage is a very useful, realistic measure i appreciate...does Android even have something that measures actual usage vs idle time?

my 5 lasted a bit longer than the 5s, even though it has a bigger battery. but still not horrible. I just charge it all the time when I can, at work, in the car, etc. never had issues with memory effects.

I am quite surprised at my device's stats. I do suspect the M7 processor having something to do with the amazing stats.
My previous device (iPhone 5) could barely touch 7 hours of "Usage" before needing extra juice.
I do know that the iPhone 5S has an increase of 9.35% in the battery department, but this is just too good!

For the record, I do not know what is running in the background (checked it as well), and I can assure y'all that music app isn't running in the background.
I am happy with the way things are going for my iPhone, but I sure would love to get a reasonable answer for this anomaly!

Is your usage purely on LTE?

I'm getting horrible battery life, I think it's due to the 7.0.4 update? It was at 100% when I woke up at 5am this morning. Within 30 mins of listening to music only, it went down to 88%. I rarely get out of work with any battery life left. It's mainly music I listen to, very little browsing the web.

    Technically no.
Why I say that is because there are times, such as when in a voice call, that the phone has to switch to 3G to receive/transmit data.
But 99.8% of the times, it is connected via LTE, as the place where I live in has heavily invested in the 4G LTE infrastructure.

But my 'Usage' stats comes from various activities including voice calls, emails, internet browsing, social media apps (FB, Instagram, FourSquare, WhatsApp, etc.), Which is quite the normal usuage and I have to say that the battery is remarkable which gives me more mileage than iP5.

Well I'm pretty sure you know all of these well, and I guess it all boils down to how well you balance it out.
Most of the tips which I've jotted down have already been mentioned by the folks out here in iMore.

So if any thanks were to come my way, I think they (iMore) deserve all of it.

    1. Location Services

This is located in Settings --> Privacy --> Location Services.
Experts say to turn this option off. But I keep it switch on as it benefits me and at the end of the day, that is what an iPhone is to me, i.e, a communication tool.
My recommendation would be to choose what app you want 'location service' for. For me, its all social media apps, and some Apple/Google apps.

    2. Brightness

Recommendation is to set this to a minimum level, but I leave mine somewhere along the halfway line.
One can also opt for the 'auto brightness' option which can be found in, Settings --> Wallpapers & Brightness --> Auto-Brightness

    3. Automatic Downloads And Background App Refresh

Although a convenient option, the automatic downloads do tax the battery a lot and it is recommnded to turn it off.
I personally like to choose my downloads from the App Store rather than having to find out my data being consumed by these downloads!
I know one can disable that as well, but I have my preferences.
To do this, Settings --> iTunes & App Store --> Automatic Downloads --> Toggle everything off.

With regard to the Background App Refresh, it is the same case with location services. Choose what apps you wish to be refreshed in the background and toggle everything else off.
To do this, Settings --> General --> Background App Refresh

    4. Open Apps

This one is pretty much straightforward. Once you open an app, it is not officially closed until you double click your 'Home' button to bring up the multi-tasking window and close the apps with a simple flick toward the top of the screen.

    5. Push Data

If you have a lot of email accounts set up with your iPhone, it is wise to have this issue sorted out as it could potentially drain a lot of your battery.
Go to, Settings --> Mail, Contacts, Calendar --> Fetch New Data

I choose the 'Fetch' option as it suits me better and the general recommendation is to turn all off and opt the 'Manual' method.
Like I said, you need to see what option suits you the best.

There are a lot of other things apart from this you can do to improve your battery life. Most of them, like I said before, are given out here on iMore.
    Have a read through it.
How to fix battery life issues with iOS 7, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c | iMore

At the end of the day, you can only decide what you can or cannot do and that will determine the outcome. Play around with these options and develop the right formula which can give you the best output.
    Hope this helped.

I find the battery to be as expected with all other mobile phones I've used in the past....with a much longer standby time. 7-8 hours of medium use with standby 1.5-2 days. I'm overall very happy consider the size and weight of the phone, honestly expected worse.
