I ordered the T-Mobile version of the iPhone 5s from Apple and paid the full price. In checking with Apple to make sure the phone was unlocked they stated that I would have to go to T-Mobile to do that. Why? I'm paying full price to Apple, T-Mobile is not involved in the purchase, why do have to contact T-Mobile to unlock the phone? I'm planning on using the phone with the $30/mo unlimited data, text and 100 minutes of talk plan. I already have a T-Mobile sim card that I can activate for this plan. Do I have to have the phone unlocked before I can activate the phone with the sim card I purchased?

Since we are not Apple, we cannot say with absolute certainty that it will be unlocked. Our understanding is that this is a primary reason to purchase from Apple directly. However, T-Mobile can unlock your device after specific requirements are met. You can view those here: SIM Unlock your phone The plan you have mentioned here can be activated with any device, but it must be done through T-Mobile.com or directly at a Wal-Mart location since this is their exclusive plan. I hope this helps.

If you are going to use the phone with T-Mobile service then there is no need to unlock. Just in case you want to unlock the phone in the future, you can request it through T-Mobile Customer Care as long as you meet the requirements for getting an unlock code. You can also find more information on a SIM unlock code by going to SIM Unlock your phone | T-Mobile Support or by searching for "SIM unlock" or "unlock" on Cell Phones | 4G Phones | iPhone and Android Phones | T-Mobile.

    The Apple representative was mistaken.

There are only four USA options for iPhone 5c/5s models sold by Apple:
    - Locked to AT&T.
    - Locked to Sprint.
    - Locked to Verizon.
    - Unlocked (for use on TMO or AT&T).

The only way to purchase an iPhone locked to TMO is to purchase it from TMO.

    Billtom,
Koeningerk is correct, the T-Mobile iPhone 5s sold from Apple is completely unlocked. If it is not when you receive it, we highly recommend you return the device to Apple immediately.
If you purchase the device from us, it will be locked.
    Congrats on the new phone!

I checked with Apple again and again they stated that the T-Mobile version of the iPhone is not unlocked. The unlocked version of the iPhone 5s has not been released yet. My question is will T-Mobile unlock my phone and can I activate it for the $30/mo unlimited data, text and 100 minutes of talk plan. If so, do I have to do anything special?

if you bought it from a apple store it is unlocked its been proven on other sites already .if it is not unlocked ,very unlikely as well . then you can return it for a full refund i think they are told to say that for some reason also reported of at&t device only purchases were unlocked as well and verizon is unlocked from the start bought from a apple store or verizon

When I placed my original order the order confirmation showed the description of the phone followed by the word unlocked. When I checked today the word unlocked has been removed. I'm now assuming that the phone I receive will be locked to T-Mobile. Why do I have to wait 40 days to get phone unlocked when I didn't buy the phone from T-Mobile and paid Apple the full price? My other question is will this phone work with the $30 unlimited data, text and 100 minutes of talk plan?

Why does it matter? If you are using on T-Mobile anyway? What is 40 days if you are using the promo plan.

It matters because I'm leaving for Germany before the 40 days are up and I want to use it there with a German sim card. Also, I paid for an unlocked phone.

No, going for a vacation. It would be great to be able use my new iPhone. It looks like I'll have to use my old unlocked gsm phone and my iPad with the AT&T international data plan.

You know thinking about it. I can see why this is happening. This may be due to thefts. Samsung recently regionally locked their Note 3. Apple might be doing the same thing with also findmyiphone as another tool. Helps reduce a lot of overseas thefts.

Also this might be Apples doing not T-Mobile doings. Generally for as long as I remember all the factory unlocked iPhones weren't released on release day. They were released 1-2 months after initial release(around the time most unlock policies went into effect).

The T-Mobile is unlocked some of the Apple employees are misinformed.

There is a sticky now that Irish started about the Verizon model which is fully unlocked. This is the best model to get since it has all the necessary LTE bands and the CDMA/GSM bands you need for 3G and HSPA+. If you can I would return the T-Mo model then buy the Verizon model full price.

There's no advantage to getting the Verizon phone unless you are in the US and may potentially switch to Verizon in the future. Both the Verizon and tmobile variants have the SIM unlocked.

It will work on GSM. Do to know about LTE. You'd have to compare your carriers LTE bands with what is offered.
