Perhaps because in the first one the background is pure white, while in the second one the background isn't (i.e., there is a gradient)? I'm guessing that's the way it was programmed, which is not very smart.

The way apple set it - if there's black close to the clock it'll be white & vice versa but sometimes it's buggy.
