I need some help. A friend needs a phone just for texting and calling. She wants an iPhone for iMessage.

She’s on consumer cellular and I have an old unlocked 5c lying around.

It runs 10.3.3.

For what she needs it for it should be ok right?

I don’t think it gets voLTE. Will that be a problem?

Thanks!

Re: Friend needs a phone

It should not be a problem that it does not have VoLTE. Coverage may be spotty depending on the bands being used. Most likely can pick up a cheaper 6/6s and use that.

If it’s just for texting and calling, yes, the iPhone 5C should be sufficient.

We were having dinner with a friend a couple of days ago and she was telling us that they had given her 6 yr old son her fiancé’s old iPhone 5 so that he could call and FaceTime with them when he’s off on vacation with his Dad. She’s due with her 2nd baby and they wanted a way to communicate with the 6 year old so he could see the baby and talk to them. It’s working just great for that purpose.

Doing some research, Consumer Cellular uses AT&T and T-Mobile airwaves. So any unlocked GSM phone should work.
