while update iphone5 with latest ios version it is stuck on asking for apple id and password. It will not accept id and password used to set up phone. Can't change the the password because I can't open the phone. Tried to go into icloud on laptop and ask security questions and that won't let us in either.

Put the device in recovery (hopefully, you've already made a backup), connect the device to your computer, and then select to restore it. Unless you're typing in the wrong iCloud credentials, it should work. Heck, it gives you a hint of the Apple ID the device is associated with.
