Any lithium battery has a "lifespan", and it may just be because your phone is getting older, and the battery has reached it's limit of effective charges.

And...welcome to iMore! :)

As @TLD1 explained, if you've recently experienced shortened battery life it's probably just reaching it's end of life. I'm willing to guess your iPhone 5 is at least a few years old, so this is a common issue. Apple batteries are designed to retain 80% capacity for 500 full charge cycles.

I still use my 5 some for a few things. It's battery is about gone. It will go from 100% to 20% in less than an hour. It will cut off at 40% at times. That's how it is with phones 2 Plus years old. My 5 is now about 2? years old with fairly heavy use.
