I would venture that if you can't see them, they aren't actually on your device.

Did you do a backup/restore or have you synced your phone to your computer and accidentally unticked an option?

I haven't heard of iOS just deleting some pictures before a certain date, so I think it must have been something you or someone else did accidentally, or without realising.

If you're looking at the camera roll, they won't all be there. It only goes back so far. Look in Moments. Check on the "photos" side and not in "Albums". Like here:
