Battery Low, Phone Shuts Down

2+ year old iPhone 5 has recently began turning off when battery gets to about 30%. Ideas as to what might be happening and a fix if any?

I can only assume the battery is defective. Make a genius bar appointment to have them check it out for you.

My iPhone 5 did this and they replaced the battery for free at the Apple Store after running some diagnostics. I think this is a common issue with the 5. Look up iPhone 5 battery replacement program.

The battery has problem. You may ask to buy other battery.

Does the battery problem only happen when the temperature is cold? I've noticed this winter that if I take my iPhone 5S out in freezing (or near-freezing) weather the battery level quickly goes down and the phone shuts down.

It's possible, but that has not been my experience in freezing or near-freezing temperatures.
