My mom has a friend who says that her iPhone 5 has a crack across the rear camera lens and asked if I could repair it. While I've replaced broken screens and other parts on several different phone models the past few years, I have very little experience with the iPhone 5.

I don't have access to an iPhone 5 and I have not yet had a chance to look at this phone. Can anyone tell me if the housing has a lens cover that would be cracked, or is there an open hole that leaves the camera lens exposed?

I don't have any issues in re-housing the phone if necessary, but I'm looking for help in determining whether I would need to replace the camera itself or the back housing for this type of damage.

The iMore Blog's DIY tutorial on replacing the iPhone 5 rear iSight camera may shed some light on the situation. You can view it via the following link.

I just read through that article. Unfortunately, it doesn't answer my question about what part might actually be scratched. After more research, it looks like there is a removeable lens cover installed on the rear housing that is probably the part that needs to be replaced. Can anyone confirm this to be true for the iPhone 5?
