I would still have Apple take a look at the device. There might be something inside that they can clean to bring it back to working all the time. Or for a small fee they might be able to switch out the button in house.

Again have Apple look at it first.

I would make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple store and let them take a look at it. The same thing happened to my daughters 4S. Good luck.

i had this same problem just a couple weeks ago and i was lucky enough to make an appointment and go apple store a few days before my warranty expired and they have replaced my phone with a brand new one... but if its only a few days after warranty expires u should try to make an appointment still and bring it in and see what they can do.. the guy told me at times even if the phone is out of warranty a few days or so they can still replace it with no charge or maybe fix it.. but goodluck and hope apple can help you out

So here's the result.. I took it to the apple store yesterday and had them look at it. The guy there was really nice and he checked out my phone and he told me that it was 56 days out of warranty and that I could buy a replacement for $280. There's no way I will pay that for a refurbished iPhone 5. So then he started to explain maybe I could do an early upgrade through Verizon. He looked and it said that I couldn't do that. So the only option I have right now is live with it or go through Verizon and use the Edge program and pay full retail of $649 and trade my iPhone 5 in for $200. Then it would be distributed among a 24 month period and added to my bill each month. It was roughly $20 extra a month I would be paying. There is no way I am using their crazy upgrade program and paying them even more money when my bill is already $170 a month. So that is pretty much it. I guess I'm gonna be stuck with it or go third party. I might research some third party repair centers.

Yes you can turn on Assistive Touch by going to Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch this will enable an on screen Lock Button you can use in place of your broken physical button

I did that at first but that white icon that gets put on the screen is a huge eye sore. Lol

$280 for a refurbished 5 is a pretty good deal. Check out what they are going for on eBay.

I find it disturbing that a company that lives on a reputation of quality has thousands of customers who experience the failure to the lock button shortly after 1 year and their response is we'll replace it for only $200+ dollars. I buy apple products because of their quality reputation. If that doesn't hold up, why should I pay the premium to buy Apple products?

Agreed. The software solution is to have this floating eye sore on your screen and three touches to get to a lock screen. Not a good alternative if you ask me. Apple Care plus will extend the warranty. It's wise to get it when the phone is purchased.
Most quality electronic devices have a 1 year warranty.

Do you have an iFixit near you. You're already out of warranty, I'd at least check with them. On their website it's listed as difficult but has the power button, cable, and all the tools. I'd see if they'd fix it. It's about $30 for all parts. So they'd probably fix it for $125-$150 which isn't bad?
