I'm in the US and will buy either unlocked or at&t phone.

I'm not planning to use this phone as a cell phone though. I'm giving it to my mom who will use it as an ipod (she wants the better iphone 5 camera).

    Thanks.

Ask for the serial number and call sat to verify. Or meet at an AT&T store and have them. Check it in store.

As stated above, meet at the store or Apple. Every phone transaction I have ever done (even if its me doing the selling), I have strongly pushed (and succeeded) to meet at the AT&T store or Apple. This way we both walk away knowing the transaction is legit and the product(s) are working properly and legal.

I would agree, getting the device checked at your carrier or an Apple store is the way to go. I haven't bought a used phone (yet) although I'm seriously considering it. The only way I'd do it is if the seller agreed to meet me at a carrier's store. If they don't like the idea, too bad... I won't purchase a used smartphone any other way. I work hard for every dollar and can't afford to drop a few hundred on a potentially stolen or carrier-blocked device.

What're you supposed to ask the Reps at the Carrier Store? I just bought a used Iphone 5, off eBay and i'm wondering what I should be doing aside from visually inspecting it when it arrives.

I only buy phones that comes with like box charger etc. Just match the IMEI of box to phone.

You actually have to call the AT&T customer service and have them check the IMEI - in the store they're just going to pop in a sim and see if it works. The stolen IMEI takes about 24 hours to register and the phone won't appear to be stolen for that time.

I know this because I just fell victim to this last night, bought a phone asked the store to check the IMEI they said they can't do it at the store level but they can put the SIM in and see if it worked.

maybe the apple store is different but the AT&T store isn't much help

Simple. Meet the seller at your wireless store... have them activate the phone. If it works, pay the man. If not, don’t pay him. Odds are if he agrees to meet you there, everything is legit. If he refuses to meet there, you just avoided being scammed.

This. I always meet at the store. If buying off eBay I will only buy from certain sellers. Look at the seller rating and read the feedback. It's there for a reason.

If it's ever been swapped out at an Apple store though it won't match. They don't swap the box.
