This is what happens.... It's primarily in the email. I will go through the inbox read & delete. There seems to be 200+ waiting to load. After I delete 20 or so, maybe 15 assorted previously deleted messages show up. They are not just the ones deleted but could be from anytime.

No, you cannot currently get a virus on your iDevice. This is more of an account issue. Try removing it from your phone, deleting all the old emails from your computer, then re-add it to your phone/iPad.

Now in regard to your question, yes, it is "possible", but highly unlikely. If you suspect that one or more of your email messages contains a virus, why risk downloading those messages onto your iPhone? Can you not scan the attachments using a home computer first? There are virus scanning apps in the App Store for you to purchase. Simply type the words, "anti virus protection" on the App Store's search field to get a listing. Take care...

You'll probably never get a "virus" on an iPhone...malware on the other hand is a possibility, but up to this point, there have not been any. Apple patches security holes pretty quickly, and unless you have a jailbroken device, the chances of you running into malware is pretty much non-existant.
The "issue" you are describing is simply the email box self populating to the options you have in settings (last 50 emails, last 25 emails, etc)...so essentially, there's really not a problem, you're just getting your old emails on your phone, and when you delete them, it's sending the next batch of old emails. This is what commonly happens when a new email box is setup on an account with a lot of emails sitting in the inbox...the best solution, as mentioned above, is cleaning up your inbox and then setting up the email on the iPhone again.

Who is your email client? comast, knology, etc are all really bad email clients.
IMAP is the way to go. You can set it when you delete or read an email. you don't have to re-read, re-mark as read.
Apple iCloud is IMAP and Gmail. Not sure who else has IMAP.
