Hi all,
I just joined this forum after getting my first ever iPhone and am using the Verizon version. I admit, I've never been a fan of apple but wanted something different and needed a device that holds signal which my verizon galaxy s3 major issues with.

Having said that I have a few questions. First, is there away to change themes on this phone? What are the best/must have apps? I have several apps I bought for android like tapatalk, is there a way to get the apple version without rebuying? And something nobody including my diehard apple buddy cannot figure out, what happens to having auto brightness? I have to do all brightness Settings manually. Oh as a diehard google user, I noticed the app support was minimal , any suggestions for gtalk?

Welcome to the world of iPhone!!

Unfortunately in regards to your first question there is no way to theme the phone without being jail broken. I know that's a huge draw for android as I used have a GNex and themed the crap out of that thing.

As for best/must have apps hmm it depends on what you want to do with your phone. I would say install Jasmine (YouTube app), Apple Store app, Cut the Rope, Quickoffice (if you need word processing), Trillian (gtalk support), imore app.

With regards to tapatalk you will need to buy it again since the App Store is separate from the play store. It sucks cause I paid for it on android as well.

Auto-brightness is in the settings under brightness and wallpaper then just toggle on auto brightness.

Also the walkthroughs that Rene and co have made on iMore are very helpful with newcomers.

Any other questions feel free to PM me I started out with an iPhone so I'm fairly versed with them just bare in mind I was with android for the past 2 years before my ip5 so I might be a little rusty LOL.

Thanks for answering my questions. The confusing part is this device does not have an auto brightness, myself and one of my supervisors who worked for apple and has the same phone could not find it, he thought it was an error on the software even though we are running the same version and his does, only difference is his is on AT&T and mine is on Verizon

I have a Verizon 5 and auto brightness is the first thing I see when I lick Settings>Brightness and Wallpaper. If you don't see it, you have a lemon and should exchange it.

I came from Android, although I had an iPod Touch and ipad3, so knew the iOS well. As earlier poster mentioned, it depends what you need personally. I bought many of my apps off of reviews from other posters or App Advice, which I have on Pulse. I bought way too many on Android that I NEVER used, so I am being more discriminating now. But I have a nice assortment that suits ME.

Personally, I got tired of all the customization you could do on Android, and rarely used it at he end. It came down to wanting a PHONE that WORKED without all the glitchiness of Android. And I could not be happier!

Just to update:
Took the phone to Best Buy where I bought it and they had no clue so I went to the Verizon store next door and their demo unit had the Auto Brightness on it, the store manager spent about 45 minutes trying to figure it out and called Apple Tech who did a remote diagnostics and found the phone had the Ipod software installed which does not have the Auto Brightness, so Apple to him to have it exhanged. Went back to Best Buy and they exchanged it no questions and the new one does have the software as it should.

That's very strange and interesting, the wrong software. That may be a first around this forum. At least you got it all worked out.

That's very interesting. Never once have I heard about iPod software ending up on an iPhone. Let alone a newer model iPhone like the 5. I'm very much interested in finding out if iPod OS can even go on an iPhone. Interesting, however good thing you got it taken care of. When in doubt, your local Apple retailer is more than likely to help you out!

Glad that auto brightness issue is resolved.

Now as for GTalk, get the free version of BeeJive (the green one) and you can use GTalk with it.

That is a strange situation...the only thing i really know about the auto-brightness function is that on the most recent iPod Touch, the ambient light sensor was left off for whatever reason, but that should not have effected your iPhone 5, and it would have been impossible to have the iPod software if you had the other iPhone functions.

Just out of curiosity, had you ever tried a full restore on the phone? Might have just been some glitchy backup or something, who knows...

...also, I wonder, when they bought the device was it opened brand new in front of them? It just all sounds rather odd, no? I know AT&T now open the box in front of customers after the scandal with the guy who bought a 'new' device and it was full of porn photos!

Yep, AT&T learned their lesson quickly.

I am just relating what the Apple guy told the Verizon manager. I bought the phone at Best Buy and they did indeed open it infront of me, along with the replacement.
