So I'm a heavy duty tethering kind of guy...throughout the week i tether my phone to my personal computer 4-5 days a week for 10-12 hours a day so i can browse the internet and use Netflix. I use 4-6GB per month consistently, and i use it in some areas where cellular signals are difficult to get optimally (dead zones, remote areas, etc). I'm happy to report that so far this morning, LTE is proving to be an absolute gem for tethering. In an area that i regularly patrol early in the week, i would run into very pitiful 4G coverage (due to a dead spot in the area combined with shielded government buildings that simply kill off signal strength)...this morning I'm cruising along at broadband speeds and loving every second of it!

I was getting 1-1.5mbps DL (at best) in this area with my 4S, and I'm sitting at 12-14mbps DL with the iPhone 5.

LTE and the iPhone belong together. I am officially a believer.

Glad to hear! I'm going to be tethering mine a few times a week when I go to class or to do homework on my lunch breaks at work!

Sweet . . never tried tethering yet. With LTE, I'm looking forward to trying it out. It's also nice that this feature is free with VZW

This was the one feature I truly liked about 4G/lte. I tried out one of the Android phones about a year ago and used the hotspot feature with my iPad and the web pages loaded up super fast.

Yup. With "share everything plan", tethering is free and included

Wish it were free with AT&T! I'm paying an additional $20 a month for it.

It's free on AT&T if you switch to a data share plan...new thing just like Verizon's setup.

Question: Now that tethering is free on my VZW plan, is there a need to separately activate my LTE plan on my iPad?? VZW charges an additional $10/month to include my iPad to our "share everything plan", but I'm thinking that's unnecessary since I'll always have my iPhone with me and can simply tether my iPad if needed.

Will tethering use up more data vs using LTE on the iPad without tethering??

Once LTE is in my area, I'll definitely be using it at least for upload speeds.

i was wondering the same thing. the data usage is the same either way. the advantage of paying that $10 extra is that your iPhone won't drain so fast with battery since you won't need it for tethering. I'm sure the iPad's big battery can still last a long time even if the LTE radio is in use. Also if you were to get a call at the same time, your iPad will still cruise at 4G speeds. If you were tethering from a Verizon phone, you would lose data all together. If you tether from an At&t phone, you will still get 3G speeds while on a call.

So I guess you have to decide if those 2 benefits are worth the $10. I would say for a heavy user of LTE on the iPad on the go, then yes. But a casual user that needs internet on the go every now and then, then I would say no.

the USB tether is nice as well. good way to charge your phone at the same time. though i guess you could do the same while on wi-fi, but i'm assuming you will save more power this way.

Had no idea! The person at Best Buy never explained that to me! Might have to look at switching plans see which way would be cheaper for me.

    Hey guys.

I'm new to iPhone and tethering - so I apologize if this is a noob question.

I'm going to be picking up the iPhone5 sometime in the next couple weeks. I have a plan a work which includes 6gb data and free tethering. I'm also going to be moving to a new apartment and am wondering if I'll even need to buy additional landline internet.

Do you guys think 6gb will be sufficient? Here's what I use the internet for currently:
    -Email
    -Browse forums
    -Browse Kijiji, Craiglist, Ebay
    -Youtube videos
    -Read news
-ESPN, TSN, Sportnet video player (highlights & 2-3 minute long clips)
-Netflix (Watch probably about 4 hours a week on average)

    Any input is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Erik

Tethering 4-5 days a week and use 4-6GB a month? How is this possible?

With my iPhone 5, i almost used up 4 out of 5GB data in just two weeks!

    How could you??
