What happens to prior versions?

I am new to I phones. It looks as though when a new model comes out the previous two models are retained at a lower price. If true, when the 5 is released I would expect the 3GS to be no longer available and the least expensive then to be the 4 and likely to be the almost free one at AT&T as the 3GS is now. If true, I should obviously wait a few days before I buy.

Am I right?
