Knowing how Apple likes to play it safe in what works for them by keeping the math simple. My question is, can the resolution of an iPad 2/original be used in a smaller form factor to get the "retina" quality display? I'm not too keen on calculating "ppi" but what if Apple goes for a 4.3 in. with the original ipad resolution. Or what size screen would keep the 4:3 aspect ration?

Anyways just a small speculation. What ever they chose, I'm sure will please current customers.

They could do that. But it would have to be pretty small. The iPad 2's resolution is only a little higher than the iPhone so it couldn't be much larger than that. Around 4" might be about right.

But Apple kind of already has a tablet that size; it's called the iPod Touch.
