How to tell if my SIM card is UNLOCKED

I called Verizon to ask to have my iPhone 4S unlocked. Is there anywhere in the settings that I can see that the network is INACTIVE? On my Blackberry I could see this in the options. Verizon unlocked the phone for me but I guess I won't know till I put in another SIM card.

If you put an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM, it may not work. I believe it only unlocks for international use. Or so
