Why are they there?

One looks like it says FCC. One looks like a garbage can with an X over it. A C, an E, and an exclamation point.

Why do they have to be there?

Most of these symbols indicate only that the iPhone has received approval to use the various frequency spectra reserved for mobile and wireless communications and that it has passed various safety checks. We dove into hundreds of pages of regulations to see what the iPhone's various tramp stamps mean.

This information is on the exterior of the iPhone because, in the short-sighted wisdom that Apple loves to employ, the iPhone does not have a removable battery cover. If you have any other branded smartphones lying around, look under the battery and you will see similar information.
