Likewise!! I had the nexus in my hand and it was to big!! Then I was like I am getting the iPhone 4s and not looking back

Interesting. With AT&T, as long as you are in the month you are eligibile to upgrade, you can upgrade. For example, I was eligible to upgrade to the 4S on Nov 18, and AT&T let me upgrade Nov 1.

I guess Verizon doesn't do the same?

No...i ordered mine on the 30th i think it was. They gave me 6th for ship date. But no...vzw gives you an exact upgrade date.
