Itunes question when upgrading to iphone 4s

When the 4s arrives, is it as simple as connecting the new phone to the existing itunes account?

Will all applications transfer automatically?

If not, what is the easiest way to switch over to the new device?

Yes it's pretty much that simple, what kind of iPhone do you have now ?

you plug into itunes and select what you want to sync.. then sync it you have to tell it to sync your apps and things,.

Yes, when you get the new phone it will ask you if you want to set it up as a new phone or from an iTunes backup. Just select the backup and it will put everything back on your phone just like it was for your old phone.
