You U.S. guys can't buy them from apple unlocked right away? That's just stupid!

isn't apple selling the unlocked ones? as far as i'm aware, the ones on contract will be locked to carrier and the ones you buy off contract at full price are factory unlocked.

update: i think that's cuz im in canada. not sure how the US store is.

I am definitely going to fork over the $849. If you travel overseas a lot, it is a no brainier. No way I am paying AT&T "only" $2.00 - $3.00 per minute, and $99999999 for data usage.

I've got an unlocked 3GS for those times that I travel back to Ireland, so I guess I don't have to worry so much about having my 4S unlocked too.

Just a few days ago, I asked an Apple representative the question about when will they will be selling the unlocked iphone 4S and their response was just sometime this November. They did not tell me a date nor did the rep sounds as though she knew. She said she was waiting to buy one as well.

They have not announced a date. Employees will know when stock arrives... The online store will likely show them available the same day as well. That's what happened with the factory unlocked iPhone 4

apparently Sprint has decided to lock their iPhone 4S' as of today. So anyone purchasing one now it will come locked(sim). People who bought early are in the clear. Phew, glad I did.
